Host Town Registration
Gifu City and Gifu Prefecture entered into a host town relationship with Canada on December 28, 2018. Gifu City already had a sister city relationship with Thunder Bay, so it saw an opportunity for both cities to promote further athletic and cultural exchanges through a host town relationship.
On December 17, 2019, Gifu City and Gifu Prefecture used their exchange between Paralympians from both countries to enter into an All-inclusive Society Host Town Relationship with Canada.

Canada is located in the northern most section of North America. It shares a border with the United States of America and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. It has the second highest area (if including the bodies of water in its borders) of any country and over half of the country is covered in forests. There are prairies from Lake Winnipeg from central Canada to the Canadian Rockies, and the country is rich in nature.
The city of Thunder Bay (around 448 km² and a population of around 110,000 people), one of Gifu City’s Sister Cities, is situated on the west coast of Lake Superior, one of the Great Lakes. It is located in Northwestern Ontario, and it is a key city in the region acting as hub for education and medical services.
Exchange with Canada
May 2019 Relay Athletes and Coaches from the Canadian Track and Field Federation Visit Gifu
Athletes and coaches from the Canadian Track and Field Federation visited Gifu. Athletes practiced in a training camp held in the Gifu Memorial Center to qualify for the IAAF World Relay 2019.
The athletes and coaches also visited Akanabe Elementary, their support school, and deepened their exchange with the students there. Students from the Miwa Junior High track and field team watched the Canadian athletes practice as well.
July 2019 Athletes and Coaches from the Canadian Paralympic Track and Field Team Visit Gifu
Athletes and coaches from the Canadian Paralympic Track and Field Team visited Gifu to train for the Japan Paralympic Tournament 2019.
They also visited Gifu Special Needs School and Gifu Shima Junior High School, their support schools, and deepened their exchange with the students. The students also went to Nagaragawa Stadium on the day of the tournament to support the athletes.
August 2020 A new host town exchange project began
Gifu Prefecture has created official social media accounts and started posting information about Canada.
The prefecture plans on posting information about the athletes and furthering the mutual exchange between Gifu and the Canadian Track and Field Federation, so please make sure to follow them.
