Guardians of children age 6-15 that have Japanese citizenship are legally required to have them attend school. This is known as compulsory education.
Children with foreign nationalities can choose whether or not to enroll in elementary and junior high schools.

An X-ray examination may be required prior to enrollment if you have a history of tuberculosis in family members or cohabitants or have a history of residence in a country where it is spreading rapidly.

Please contact the School Safety Support Division if you would like to enroll your child in school. We will explain the application process for enrollment.
Guardians of children with foreign nationalities that reach the age of enrolling in school are sent an enrollment guide from the board of education.

In public elementary and junior high schools, entrance fees, tuition, text book fees, etc. are free, but uniforms, learning materials besides textbooks, field trips, etc. will need to be paid for by guardians.

Enrolling in elementary and junior high schools

After completing enrollment procedures, enrollment notifications will be sent to guardians towards early February of the year of enrollment (notifications for junior high schools will be sent through the elementary school your child is enrolled in).

If moving to a different school district within Gifu City

First receive the necessary documents from your child's school. Then, when submitting a moving notice at the Citizen's Affairs Division or at another city hall branch office, also make sure to complete the process to transfer school districts.

  1. Please notify your child's school that you will be moving before doing so.
  2. On your child's last day of school, please have them receive the documents required for transferring schools.
  3. Update your address at the Citizen's Affairs Division (Gifu City Hall, 1F)
Please take the documents you received from your child's school as well as the guardian and child's passports and residence cards to the School Safety Support Division.
  4. Receive enrollment forms from the School Safety Support Division.
  5. Please have your child bring(2)and(4)with them to their new school.

If transferring to a new school outside of Gifu City

Receive the necessary documents from your child's school and complete the transfer process with the municipality you are moving to.

If your child has been accepted into a private elementary/junior high school

Please receive an enrollment acceptance letter (入学承諾書) from the school and submit it with the notice of enrollment you received from the board of education to the School Safety Support Division.

If your child is unable to enroll due to an illness, etc.

Please consult with the School Safety Support Division as soon as possible.

Guardians that have a child with a disability should contact the School Guidance Division.

Those that have a child with an illness/disease should contact the School Safety Support Division.
