Elementary and Junior High Schools
Guardians of children age 6-15 that have Japanese citizenship are legally required to have them attend school. This is known as compulsory education.
Children with foreign nationalities can choose whether or not to enroll in elementary, junior high schools or compulsory education schools.
An X-ray examination may be required prior to enrollment if you have a history of tuberculosis in family members or cohabitants or have a history of residence in a country where it is spreading rapidly.
Please contact the School Safety Support Division if you would like to enroll your child in school. We will explain the application process for enrollment.
Guardians of children with foreign nationalities that reach the age of enrolling in school are sent an enrollment guide from the board of education.
At public elementary, junior high, and compulsory education schools, tuition, entrance fees, and textbook costs are free. However, guardians are responsible for expenses such as uniforms, supplementary learning materials, school trips, and excursions.
