Cote d’Ivoire in French means, “the ivory coast”, and it comes from European merchant ships that came to the area to engage in the ivory trade in the Middle Ages. Although it exports the most cocoa out of any country in the world, it still has a relatively low GDP when compared to the rest of the world.
